The main aim of the General Secretariat of Sports (GSS), Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sport is the determination of strategic plan and the configuration of the implementation method of the country's sports policy. Furthermore, within the framework of the State's constitutional obligation is aiming to protect, administrate and financially support the sport activities. In particular, the main priorities of this strategy are:
A. To prevent and protect the health of any athlete or potential athlete (in competitive or non-competitive level), as well as the prevention of interpersonal violence against children and adolescents in sport.
B. The systematic promotion, dissemination and consolidation of the social perception of the sport spirit and the values of Olympism to the country civilians. Furthermore, the dissemination of the sport spirit at National and International level by any appropriate promoted process.
C. The scientific assessment of the country's sporting needs and its depiction on the strategic sport policy, in order to implement and operate educational programs, actions and projects accordingly to all the evolved to sport activities (physical persons and sport bodies).
D. The institutional, scientific, logistical and financial support of supervised public and private sports Organizations/Entities to ensure the quality and efficiency of their sport services to the athletes and citizens.
E. The supervision and administration assessment on the basis of the strategic plan and sports policy of all physical persons (i.e trainers) or sport Entities/Bodies that involved sporting activities and have recognised by GSS.
The Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports cooperates with 63 authorised National Federations and about 6.500 Sport Clubs, regarding the development of competitive sports.
The total number of coaches who are employed at the above-mentioned Federations and Sport Clubs is 17.197 all over Greek region, according to the electronic data based list which is reserved by the Ministry of Education, Religion affairs and Sports. It should be emphasised that the process of the coaches’ continuing education and training (apart of that which is delivered by Sports Universities) is (by law) under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, Religion affairs and Sports.
Furthermore, Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports develops, administrates and funds 7.000 Sport for All Programs (including programs and activities for vulnerable social groups) implemented by the Local Authorities, National regions and not competitive sport Entities, which are carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports and cover the majority of the population of Greece.
